May Deco Drinks at Boot & Shoe Service in Oakland!
This month we travel across the bay to a beautiful brick building just down the street from our famous Art Deco movie house, the Grand Lake Theater, built in 1926.
Did you know: The glorious rooftop sign greeting you as you enter the neighborhood on the Grand Lake is original, still using 2800 light bulbs. The firing sequences are also original to 1926, powered by the same 1/2 horsepower motor using a purpose-built device akin to a (very large) music box.
In a building built just three years later, Boot & Shoe Service kept the name of the former tenant when opening an Italian restaurant and bar in a former boot & shoe repair shop. It’s quirky, and it works.
We’ll meet you at the bar in the back - just follow the left wall after you enter.
If you’d like dinner while you’re out having drinks, you can order at the bar. Their pizzas are fantastic.
The full bar has a rotating menu, and can serve up any traditional cocktail you’d like. We suggest the Monk’s Garden, a wonderful gin cocktail created in-house.
Let us know if you find the hidden payphone!
