Avalon Ball on Catalina Island

The Art Deco Society of Los Angeles invites you to join them for their flagship fundraising event, the Avalon Ball.

The Avalon Ball is a fantastic journey into the past when Big Bands played for huge audiences and were broadcast to the nation from the Art Deco / Mediterranean Revival Casino Ballroom. The Avalon Casino Ballroom, located on Catalina Island (just off the coast of Southern Los Angeles) in the city of Avalon, opened its doors on May 29, 1929. The Art Deco Society of Los Angeles’ Avalon Ball takes place annually in the ballroom’s anniversary month and attracts 700 vintage dance and music enthusiasts from all over the world, who dress to the nines to immerse in glorious Art Deco opulence as they glide across the 10,000 square foot dance floor (one of the last to exist!) - surrounded by romantic ocean views.

As a member of a sister art deco society, they have set up a special promo code for our members to purchase tickets at a discounted rate. Simply enter sistersociety22 when selecting tickets.

More information about this evening of music and dancing can be found on their website.

LAST CALL BALL - Repeal of Prohibition Celebration

LAST CALL BALL - Repeal of Prohibition Celebration

The Old Ironsides Bar is celebrating its 84th anniversary this year. The family owned and operated establishment opened in 1934 as the very first business to obtain a liquor license in Sacramento after Prohibition on December 5, 1933. The 21st Amendment repealed the 18th Amendment of January 16, 1919, ending the increasingly unpopular nationwide prohibition of alcohol.

Harley White Jr. has booked Old Ironsides to celebrate the Repeal of Prohibition and will be playing music of the era with his band for dancing and cocktails!

Historian William Burg will share stories of Prohibition era Sacramento, including notable locals involved in the "bootlegging" trade, and how our loose enforcement of liquor laws drew the attention of Hollywood.

No host bar - Hors d’oeuvres will be provided.

Formal attire if you desire to inspire.

Tickets are $30 in advance, $40 at the door.

ADSLA presents Puttin' on the Ritz: Harlem Renaissance Fashion

A virtual presentation by Camara Holloway and Elizabeth Way

Presented by the Art Deco Society of Los Angeles

Harlem during the Jazz Age was renowned for the style of its denizens. The twenties was a time of radical transformation for clothing, and Harlem was at the cutting edge of new trends, influencing mainstream fashion and culture in unprecedented ways. This conversation will examine what people wore during the Harlem Renaissance and beyond, from flapper dresses to Zoot suits. The style of fashionable Harlemites has had a lasting influence on fashion and is still felt today.

For this program, the Art Deco Society of Los Angeles travels to New York City's Harlem of the 1920s and 30s, during the intellectual, social and artistic explosion that erupted in the Black cultural mecca. While Harlem Renaissance figures such as Zora Neale Hurston, Langston Hughes, and Louis Armstrong are still well known cultural figures today, many of the enterprising women who used their expert sewing skills to launch successful fashion design businesses during this influential period will be rediscovered in this illustrated presentation with two cultural and fashion historians.

Use promo code ICADS at checkout for a discount!

Buy one ticket per device that you wish to stream the program on. If your household wishes to further support the Art Deco Society of Los Angeles, please feel free to purchase additional tickets.

Non-members will need to set up a FREE log-in on Agile Ticketing when the ticket is purchased. We will be live streaming the program on the Agile secure platform.

ADSLA presents the Virtual Avalon Ball

We were extremely disappointed by the thought of not seeing you all on Catalina Island for our 2020 Avalon Ball, a signature event that pays tribute to the days when Big Bands played for thousands of dancers in the 1929 Avalon Casino Ballroom, while the music was broadcast live to the nation listening at home.

Well folks, that is exactly what we are going to do. We are going to build an Avalon Ball you can enjoy from home. You can dress up, come as you are, dance in your living room or sit and listen to the LIVE music from Dean Mora and more musicians. There will be cocktails mixed live, a grand promenade into the venue (for those planning to dress for the occasion), some history shared (of the island, dancing, men's and women's formal dress) and MUCH, MUCH more!

This LIVE event will take place from 2 - 5 PM (PST) on Saturday, May 16, 2020 (the night we would have convened on Catalina Island).

Broadcast from Los Angeles, CA
Pre-Show
2 - 3 PM PDT

Dancing & Music
3 - 5 PM PDT

Tickets are $10. Proceeds will pay the musicians and cover our production expenses.

Please help us spread the word by sharing our Facebook event and feel free to share this information with your vintage community or heritage organization. We hope that those who have not been able to attend in the past, due to geography, will be able to participate in this unique interactive adventure!

This Avalon Ball will take place as a Zoom event. It will be necessary to have the Zoom app running on your phone or computer, if you wish to participate. You can open an account for free.

The Zoom link will be sent to you with your confirmation from our ticket agency (Agile). You will be required to register for the event on Zoom prior to May 16th.
