The Half Moon Bay Shakespeare Company presents a Roaring Twenties version of Shakespeare’s The Merry Wives of Windsor, directed by Artistic Director Debbie Lynn Carriger, at the Mildred Owen Concert Hall in Pacifica, CA.
(Due to construction at their regular outdoor venue, this will be Half Moon Bay Shakespeare Company’s first indoor production.)
What’s it about? Here’s the lowdown in 1920s American lingo:
So, the story goes like this: Sir John Falstaff, a big-shot English knight, is in debt up to his eyeballs and thinks he can con some married women in town to get some quick cash. He writes some love letters to these two ladies, Mistress Ford and Mistress Page, thinking he can charm them into giving him money. But little does he know, these gals are no dummies, and they hatch a plan to teach him a lesson. They play along with Falstaff’s game and lead him on, prompting Mistress Ford’s jealous husband to create a scheme to catch his wife cheating on him. Will Master Ford catch them in the act? Will the ladies prank Falstaff and humiliate him in front of everyone? It’s a classic case of “don’t mess with the merry wives of Windsor”!
But that’s not all! There’s also a love story between Mistress Page’s daughter, Anne, and two suitors: Fenton, a young gent who is head over heels for Anne, and Dr. Caius, a French doctor who’s more interested in Anne’s dowry than her heart. Meanwhile, Mistress Quickly tries to set up matches between various characters. With all the scheming and plotting going on, will love conquer all in the end? Come find out at this happy and hilarious tale of love, mischief, and comeuppance that’s sure to tickle your funny bone!
Evening performances will be held at 7:30 p.m. August 18, 19, 25, and 26 and September 8, 9, 14, and 15. Matinee performances will be held at 2 p.m. August 19 and 26 and September 9 and 16. The Mildred Owen Concert Hall is located at 1220 Linda Mar Blvd, Pacifica, CA 94044.
