Introducing four new board members!

We are delighted to introduce four new members to the Art Deco Society of California Board of Directors.

Angela Grimes is a longtime active Art Deco Society member and volunteer in many aspects of our events. She served on the ADSC board as an At Large Member and as Board Secretary from 2008 - 2010. Her professional background in education as well as her connections with a number of other local historical and costuming organizations will be a great asset to us. She is a member of the Greater Bay Area Costumers Guild, the Bay Area English Regency Society, and the Dickens Faire. She describes looking forward to re-joining the Board at this time and says:

“I believe I can contribute many things to the Art Deco Society. With my experience as a board member in the past and as a veteran educator, I hope to bring that experience to the table and support how the ADSC seeks to broaden its educational outreach in order to meet its mission of preservation and education.”

Sam Rislove Etler, Programs Co-Director

Sam Rislove Etler and his partner Liz Rislove Etler will be our new Program Co-Directors. Sam has attended many Art Deco Society events for several years, often as more than just a guest! He has assisted with videotaping performances, and the Etlers have contributed as Sponsors of the Art Deco Preservation Ball and Gatsby Summer Afternoon. He enjoys the social aspects of the organization, and he also brings the much needed tech expertise that will be helpful to us this year as we find ourselves transitioning to more online programming. In his professional pursuit he works with networks and telecom systems and also digitizes old documents. He also serves on the HOA Board of the Art Deco Hamilton Building in San Francisco. In expanding his commitment to the ADSC, he explains:

“I aim to help organize and promote Art Deco programs that focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion to further the ADSC’s goals of education, research, and preservation.”

Elizabeth “Liz” Rislove Etler has been fully involved with the Art Deco Society since 2012. She is a former “Miss Art Deco” and one of three main choreographers of the Decobelle dance troupe. She has tap danced, modeled, and provided costuming. She has an academic background and worked as an editor for a scientific publication, and for the past three years, she has worked for the “Speakeasy” immersive theater production. She is brimming with ideas and states:

“I'm looking forward to drawing on my background as a performer, choreographer, editor, and event coordinator to help bring a diverse suite of programs honoring the rich, vibrant history of arts and culture in the Art Deco era to our membership and to working with the Board to establish a quarterly "New Member Night" (once we can safely gather in person!) to create a welcoming home for the curious and to foster new connections within the community.”

Amos White has been acquainted with the ADSC and a number of its members for years. He has extensive experience with other non-profit organizations and a deep interest in history. Currently he is working with the group 100K Trees for Humanity and is active in Alameda politics. He has served as marketing director for several non-profit groups including Climate Energy Mobilization Task Force. He has held board positions in local planning, governance, communications, and the environment. Amos is a poet, actor, and award-winning writer of Haiku. He has many publications to his credit along with performances, installations, and curations. He has artistic visions for the Art Deco Society and describes this idea:

As a board member, I would be excited to contribute to the splendor of Gatsby Summer Afternoon in producing a live reading from the eponymous The Great Gatsby with local Bay Area writers and poets and ADSC members.”
